Mitch Lee and Lois Spieler

(excerpt from Orly’s book “Finding the Perfect Match”)

It was a beautiful garden wedding: the bride radiant in her long, white gown, with flowered headdress; the groom tall and proud in his tuxedo, black bow tie and white orchid. Families and friends beamed as the Rabbi and Priest – at this Jewish/Catholic wedding – pronounced them man and wife. Then the newlyweds led the dancing to the romantic strains of Always.

This was no ordinary wedding. It was being witnessed live, by millions of viewers, on ABC-TV’s AM Los Angeles show. And it was an emotional experience for me, because it was I, Orly, Personal Touch Matchmaker, who had introduced the couple to each other -live on the same show – just one year earlier.

It began one Wednesday in February, 1989, when I received a call from one of the producers of AM Los Angeles asking me to appear on the show that Friday. I thought someone was playing a trick on me, so I asked for the number and said I’d call right back.

I returned the call and found myself connected to the show’s offices at ABC. I was asked, “Could you please come to the studio right away? We would like to meet you.”

After dashing over to the studio, I discovered they had booked a matchmaker from San Francisco for this Valentine Month’s show weeks ahead of time, had promoted it continuously, then canceled her at the last minute. They told me, “Orly, you’d be perfect.” While chatting with the producers, I suggested trying something different from the usual talk show format. Why not pick one the producers, find a suitable match, and introduce the couple for the first time live on the show? Young, single and bubbly, producer Lois Spieler was selected. She answered, “Oh, why not. Let’s see how good you are, Orly.”

Lois was given a questionnaire to complete, and she joked, “Orly, I want only a doctor. I’m Jewish, and I want a Jewish doctor.” I told her, “Lois, a Jewish doctor wouldn’t come on this show. Let me take care of it.” Normally, it takes about two weeks to arrange an introduction for a new client. I had only one day to find a suitable match willing and available to appear on the show that Friday. I raced to my office, studied my files and spent hours on the phone. Client after client refused to be exposed on TV. Then I called Mitch Lee – a sales representative – and a Catholic. He was a good sport and agreed.

When Mitch arrived at ABC at 8 o’clock on Friday morning, he was immediately rushed into hiding. Lois was busy with the hair stylist in the green room, and was checking her nails because I had told her that Mitch was very particular about nice hands. When they met for the first time, live on the show, I had no idea what they would say or do. Thirty-year-old Lois said she had been engaged once, five years earlier, but that they had grown apart. Then 32-year-old Mitch was brought in and said he believed he had a reliable income and good prospects. She said she thought he was “pretty cute,” and he described Lois as having a “real nice smile.” When the host asked if there was any “chemistry” between them, Mitch said there was a “definite possibility.” The couple agreed to go out on a date that Sunday and to report back, live on the show, the following Tuesday. That Tuesday, Mitch and Lois described their dinner date at the St. James Club on the Sunset Strip. Lois confessed she “really didn’t care for him” on the first show, but was impressed when he arrived at her door with a dozen roses and a bottle of champagne. He admitted he felt her “warming up” to him during the evening. They rented a video of The Wizard of Oz, returned to her apartment, but he left before the movie was over because he had to be at work early the next morning.

Then my client, Mitch, patted my hand, praised my “sixth sense” and said he wanted no more dates. He wanted to keep dating Lois – and to watch the end of the movie. Lois confessed she couldn’t sleep on Sunday night and was sleeping on the couch in her office the next day. After the show, I saw them kissing and cuddling in the green room. Six months later, the couple was back again on AM Los Angeles to give an update on their romance. Lois had lost 15 pounds. She giggled when she described their fishing and camping trips. “Jewish girls don’t do those kinds of things,” she grinned.

Mitch smiled, “We complement each other really wel1.” He pulled out a poem he had written for her and read it out loud. Then, he produced a ring from his pocket and proposed to her, taking Lois totally by surprise. There were tears in everyone’s eyes as Lois joyfully accepted, and he nervously placed the ring on the wrong hand.

A lively discussion followed with the show’s co-hosts, Steve Edwards and beautiful ex-Miss America Tawny Little, who suggested a live wedding that would outdo Tiny Tim and Miss Vicki.

During the wedding six months later, I had to stay near my phone because it was ringing off the hook with viewers interested in my Personal Touch Matchmaking Service and requesting the same miracle!
